Iowa farms are dwindling in number and growing in size, a new farm census shows.

Farms with more than $1 million in farm product sales and government payments climbed 70 percent from 2007 to 2012, the new Census of Agriculture showed Thursday. Nationally, that category increased 42 percent.

The size of Iowa farms increased as well. Operations with more than 1,000 acres bumped up 11 percent in the five-year period. The number was relatively flat nationwide.

The consolidation of Iowa farm operations means fewer families with children attending rural schools and supporting rural grocery stores, restaurants and other businesses, said Liesl Eathington, an economist at Iowa State University. READ MORE
