Iowa experiences the ninth-coldest winter in 141 years of records

DES MOINES, Iowa — If farmers noticed an unusually cold winter, their perceptions were right, according to Harry Hillaker state climatologist with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.

“It has certainly seemed like a long, cold winter and the numbers from our (climatology) office bear that out,” said Bill Northey, Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture.

The just-ended meteorological season of winter, which runs Dec. 1-Feb. 28, has been the coldest experienced in Iowa in 35 years and ranks as the ninth-coldest winter in 141 years of records, Hillaker said…  READ MORE
